A droll, young bear try to catch salmon. The bears seemed to enjoy the good weather too, because all bears we saw at the first sunny day of our rafting tour. All of them were quite young and very shy. This is an indication for the big hunting pressure, because the Bystraya river is good accessible by rods.

Through the more remote parts of Kamchatka stroll still really huge bears. Somebody tell me, that last year a bear with length of 3.75 m was shut in the North of the peninsula. In average the Kamchatka bear is even bigger than the grizzly of Alaska. Because the feeding conditions are very similar the prolonged feeding season in Kamchatka allow the bear to get fatter. Many hot springs and other volcanic active areas create a special, warmer microclimate. In this areas the vegetation awakes earlier in spring and lasts longer in autumn.

Comparing to his relatives in other parts of Siberia or in North America the Kamchatka bear is a powerful but a peaceful mammal. Perhaps the reason of bears' unagressive personality is their fish "diet" that they have preferred to the meat one. Kamchatka's bears are satisfied and safe from a lot of life troubles that bears in the Siberian taiga face. That is why they usually resolve a doubt in favor of escape. In Kamchatka I could even take the food in my tent for the night. In Kanada all the food had to be hang high on the tree and at least 100 m away from tent.
