Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky's natural setting is stupendous: beautiful, snow covered cones of volcanoes rise over rolling green hills. In the east direction extends the scenic blue Avacha Bay.
From all town's I saw in my life the surroundings of Petropavlovsk are the most expressive. Unfortunately the prevailing wet and foggy wethear in the city makes enjoying the view a seldom occasion.

At the photo the trio of snowy, alluring Petropavlovsk's Backyard Volcanoes can be seen. From left to right there are the volcanoes: Koryaksky (3456 m), Avachinsky (2751 m) and Kosielsky (2189 m). The two highest of them are still active and are subject of continuous supervision through the volcanologists. Although the volcanoes are only 30 km away from the city the citizens Petropavlovsk's seem to have no fear of eruption. 1991 erupted the Avachinsky Volcano for the last time. The emission of lava was only very small. The ash cloud covered the city with a thin ash layer.

The special charm of Petropavlovsk is, that the mountains and forests rich directly the boundary of the city. Thus the animals of the forest are not seldom sight in the town. I was told just in the week I arrived in Petropavlovsk a big bear walked down the water front at the Avacha Bay.
