We planed to make trekking for 2 or 3 weeks. It's difficult to carry enough food for so long time.
For this reason were the fish, we caught in the rivers, an important source of our food.
There were no salmon going up the rivers during our trail. Only their smaller relatives
rainbow trout, char and grayling could be found in the rivers. They all are the permanent
residents of the Kamchatka's rivers.
The different kinds of salmon migrate from the sea to the rivers the whole warm season of the year: from May to October. In Kamchatka the salmon spawning continues even under the ice. But it doesn't mean, that there are always salmon in the rivers. Before the fish enter the river they accumulate at the river mouth. In brackish water they need some time to adapt for living in the fresh water. When there are enough fish accumulated at the river mouth the migration can start. It's unpredictable when the salmon appear in the rivers. The spawning time is different in each river and changes additionally from year to year. Although the insects are to small to be seen directly on the photo, their presence get apparently by looking at the mosquito net on my head. Even during the day were the mosquitoes active in Kamchatka. Even worse than mosquitoes were the midges: only few millimeters long black flies. The midges don't suck blood. They abrade the skin tissue, what is more painful than a mosquito bite. Fortunately after each night frost disappears the pest more and more. |
