Look at the Mutnovsky volcano taken during the helicopter flight. In the background the cone of the
Opala volcano can be seen.
The day of our helicopter flight was a typical day in Kamchatka with clouds, drizzle and fog. The world under us was covered with white carpet of cloths and fog. Only the picks of the tallest volcanoes loomed over the see of clouds. Unfortunately the days with the perfect weather to photograph are very seldom in Kamchatka. Because of the remoteness and inaccessibility of the country the helicopter is the most important mean of transportation in Kamchatka. No trains traverse the peninsula. Regular bus service is basically limited to one route up the peninsula's spine. One year before I came to Kamchatka there was an helicopter accident over the peninsula. One of the victims was the governor of Sachalin, an island south of Kamchatka. To make the flights safer only one helicopter company got a overflight permit in the next year. The lack of the competition doubled the prices for the helicopter flights just in the next year. As result only half so many tourists visited Kamchatka, comparing to the years ago. |
