View of the golden roofed temple in Pashupatinath. Not only is this the most important Hindu
temple in Nepal, it's one of the most important Shiva temples on the subcontinent. It draws
devotees from all over India, including many colorful sadhus, those wandering ascetic Hindu
holy men. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple.
The holy Bagmati river in front of the Pashupatinath temple is a popular place to be cremated. There are 7 cremation ghats at the riverbank, dedicated for the member of the different castes. The higher the caste the nearer is their ghat to the Shiva temple. The burning ghat immediately in front of the temple is reserved for the cremation of royalty. The Hinduism is the national religion in Nepal. If a poor Hindu died and his family don't have money to perform the ritual burning, the government pays for his cremation. |
