Rani Pokhari at dawn. This large fenced tank (or small lake) was built by King Pratap Malla in
1667 to console his queen over the death of their son. According to records the son was trampled
by an elephant.
It was meant to be a pleasant family gathering at Narayanhiti Royal Palace but the night of 1 June 2001 turned into one of Nepal's greatest tragedies. In a hail of bullets 10 members of Nepal's royal family including King Birenda and Queen Aishwarya were gunned down by a deranged, drunken Crown prince Dipendra who eventually turned a weapon on himself. For the Hindus the king is the reincarnation of the god Vishnu. After the dead of the royal family came to unrest at the streets of Kathmandu. The Maoist uprising, which began in 1996, escalated in the next months into a civil war with many thousands of victims. The young Crown Prince Dipendra was a world changer. He wanted perform many reforms in Nepal but he didn't found agreement by the king and his government. After many failed trials he became resigned, which led to alcohol and weapon cult. Many people believe Dipendra's murderous rage was prompted by is parents' disapproval of the woman he wanted to marry. There are a lot of suspicion and conspiracy theories about the royal massacre among the Nepali. The true will probably never be known. |
