A path through the bamboo forest at Mount Ghahinga. From the 3 Ugandan Virunga volcanos has
the Mt. Ghahinga a special broad bamboo zone.
Bamboo belongs to the grass family. Bamboo is a grass of riddles and records. Of all plants, bamboo boasts the most species, the most compatible with the environment, the most used, the fastest growing and the most widespread - and it is also the most puzzling, especially in the way it dies. Bamboo only flowers once in its life. Flowering is followed by death. All members of a particular species die at exactly the same time, no matter where they are in the world, or in which type of climate. And no-one knows why. Scientists believe that flowering and death are genetically pre-programmed. |
