Like on all high mountains of the world the vegetation on the african mountains grows in distinctive bands dominated by one or more species according to altitude and aspect. High mountains are home to many specialized kinds of plants and animals. The diversity of life is even higher in the african mountains because of its long time and space isolation: the most high mountains in Africa are alone standing volcanoes.
