The strange-looking shoebill inhabits papyrus swamps and marshy lakes.

This bird has many unique properties making it difficult to find its relationship to other birds. The shoebill shares with herons the habit of flying with neck retracted. It has a small crest at the back of its head like a pelican and shows storklike behavior such as emptying bills full of water on the nest to cool its young. And while it may looks like a large, silver-grey stork, pelicans may be its closest relatives.
